This is something that was said to me by a parent way back when I first started practicing and it’s really stuck with me. It’s definitely a recurrent theme in sessions I have had since, and it’s totally understandable why.
Knowledge of how birth happens is something we might have one or two science rather vague lessons devoted to at around age 11, and then that’s pretty much it for the majority of us. From then on most of what we see and learn is from tv, films, second hand stories, and not a lot else.
Many people I work with are having their first baby and so naturally don’t always have much prior personal experience of what’s involved in birth, and even those who have had children before may well never have been told what incredible processes are actually taking place within their body and what they can do to support them, let alone the intricacies of the maternity care system they find themselves immersed in. But knowledge really is POWER. Even just having a basic understanding of the workings of your cervix, your uterus, your pelvis, your hormones can bring so much reassurance and comfort.
So if you are expecting a baby please do seek this information out. Birth is not something that you have to just go along for the ride for, you, your birth partner and your baby are very much active participants in every step, and when you truly understand what is going on within you can you put aside what you learnt in junior school and since, appreciate the true power of your birthing body, decide what is right for YOU and pave the way for the most positive experience possible.
