‘The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but never the mother. The mother is something absolutely new.’
There is no doubt that parenthood is amazing, in so many ways, but at times it can be really, really hard! After three children, and three very different birth experiences, I realised that even the most empowering and positive of birth experiences are followed by a period of postnatal recovery which can be both glorious and challenging in equal measure. Balancing changes in your body, your emotions, your lifestyle, your relationship, all whilst caring for a new little person who is reliant on you for everything is not something you are meant to do alone!
Many years ago new parents would be pretty much worshipped! Supported by family and the community, brought food, massaged, bathed, nurtured, warmed but, sadly, this is something rarely now experienced in the Western world and instead we are encouraged to ‘bounce back’ to our old selves within days of birth. But you aren’t your old self, you are a parent, as new as your baby, and deserve time to rest, to allow your body to recover, to get to know your baby, to bond with them and become confident in your new role, all at your own pace.
To assist you with this, my offering is simple. I visit you in your home and do WHATEVER you need me to do. Whether that’s care for your baby whilst you catch up on sleep, shower, spend time with older children. I can prepare a meal for your family, sort out washing, pop to the shops for you. I can offer an ear for any worries you may have, even a shoulder to cry on. Whatever it is that you need, I can help.
As a maternity nurse I am qualified in many aspects of baby care, and can offer guidance in such matters as feeding, bathing, sleep expectations, allergies, colic and reflux, and much more. My guidance is baby and family led – no strict routines or sleep training! I also want to stress that I am not there to take over or replace your role as a parent. You are and always will be the expert in your baby. I am simply here to lend a hand, be a sounding board and a safe place to voice your feelings and offer guidance should you need it. I also bring cake.
The postnatal period passes so very quickly, and it is my wish for all parents to spend this precious time feeling as relaxed, safe, confident and happy as possible. Doing so really does set you up for the best possible start to your parenting journey, and the effects of this last a lifetime.
My postnatal support services are entirely bespoke and charged by the hour. My hourly rate is £14 and whilst block bookings are available I have no minimum booking as I am aware that each family is different and it may be that a one-off booking for a couple of hours of rest is all you need.
For bookings more than 20 miles from my home (Hethersett, Norfolk) I do charge a mileage fee of 40p per mile.
Please contact me to discuss your needs or just to find out more about what I offer and how I can support you.
