I received a really beautiful testimonial last week from a wonderful mother I worked with towards the end of 2020. It was a difficult time to be expecting a baby. With so much uncertainty and worry already in the world it felt like there was so much more anxiety layered on top of the already challenging times that can come along with pregnancy and expectations of birth. Working with Poppy and her husband was a joy. They were enthusiastic, engaged, keen to learn and ask questions and every session was full of laughter, chat and sharing of stories.
We stayed in touch following the sessions and Poppy often contacted me with questions and any concerns so we could regroup and help remove any niggles. The arrival of their gorgeous baby boy earlier this year was different to the birth that they had envisaged, and sometimes this happens. Birth, like life, is unpredictable and can throw us a curve ball no matter how much preparation we do. Those experiences are valid and important. I would never ever want any clients of mine to feel they had somehow ‘failed’ at birth because things took a different path to what they had hoped. You can’t fail at birth. Nope. No way.
Whatever unfolds during the birth of your baby, hypnobirthing can still help. Even if things deviate, being informed, calm and confident has nothing but benefits. It can help you feel more in control, with a deeper understanding of what’s happening. It can give you the confidence to ask the questions you need to ask, to make the decisions you feel in your gut are right for you, for your baby and your family. Knowledge is power, right?
No birth, no matter how it happens, is ever a ‘failure’. Babies come into the world in all different ways, and every single person’s experience is different, and important. What matters is that you felt heard, respected and supported throughout. If, following your baby’s birth, you need to reflect on the experience for any reason at all, please do reach out to your GP, midwife or relevant postnatal mental health support service.
Thank you, Poppy, for these precious words. They mean the world to me, and remind me why I am so lucky to do what I do, and how special and unique each and every one of my clients is.
After a period of family focus I am pleased and excited to say I’m now re-opening my books to take on clients from late July onwards. If you are expecting a baby and looking to talk about how hypnobirthing may help you and your partner feel more ready for the incredible experience of birth and beyond, please do get in touch. I’d love to hear from you.
